Parkway Road - Dudley

One Way Street System

Dudley Council finally scrapped their One Way Street system  and re-opened the road in both directions but imposed a NO RIGHT turn at the Himley Road exit which was a sensible decision as this is virtually a blind bend which makes it difficult to see the cars coming down the Himley Road.

At last we were back to square one, the residents were happy and the Council had wasted 1000’s of pounds in rate payers money, which could have been avoided, had they consulted the residents and the motorists earlier and not just listened to a handful of the mainly Asian residents in Parkway Road.

About 4 weeks ago I noticed that the cars coming out of Parkway Road were turning right again into Himley Road causing delays in Parkway Road at peak times and when I looked closer I found that the NO RIGHT TURN  sign had disappeared.

I use this road every day in both directions and I had not seen a planning application in the street or in the papers for this change and I consequently wrote to the Council and asked them when and why they made that change when it was obvious that this would cause delays in Parkway road and could also be quite dangerous, especially with cars parked on both side of the Himley road which, in itself, is already causing congestions.

FOUR weeks later I am still waiting for a response as and I have just written them another letter requesting their reply.

Here is a copy of my letter which they have ignored to-date:

The Complaint Shop

Dear Sirs,

A few years ago your department imposed a one way street system in Parkway Road which became the focus of a large number of complaints from the residents living around this area as it clogged up all the roads during peak traffic times.

Following consultations you accepted that the entire scheme was irrational and illogical and it was eventually scrapped and the road was reopened as a two way traffic flow.

You did, however, quite rightly restrict  the right turn into Himley Road, as was not only dangerous, considering the right hand curve of Himley Road at this point, it also lead to long queues at peak times in Parkway Road as cars leaving Parkway Road were unable to turn right due to the heavy traffic on Himley Road.

It was a sensible and rational thing to do and it greatly improved the traffic flow.

However, to my utter astonishment I have noticed that this restriction has now been removed without any consultation and that cars are yet again turning right blocking the traffic in Parkway Road and slowing the traffic on the Himley Road which is already substantially narrowed and restricted due to parked cars on both side of Himley Road.

Please let me know why and when you have made this illogical and dangerous decision to allow the traffic to turn right and once again cause hold-ups and most likely accidents in the future.

This letter was dated the

3rd October 2013

and today is the

19th November 2013

and Dudley Council

have not had the common courtesy to reply

Peter Vangeersdaele

I refer to your correspondence  regarding the absence of a previously introduced ‘no right turn’ sign from Parkway Road, Dudley, near its junction with Himley Road.

This matter will be referred to my Street Lighting/Electrical Section colleagues, together with a request that the missing sign be replaced as part of a future illuminated sign maintenance programme.

Signed PETER VANGEERSDALE - GROUP ENGINEER, TRAFFIC & ROAD SAFETY

So here we are -

Not a word of an apology for not responding to my letters for EIGHT WEEKS

Not a mutter of an explanation as to why this sign is ‘absent’ or who has or may have removed the sign

No clarification as to when this sign will be replaced

IS THIS THE BEST DUDLEY COUNCIL CAN OFFER FROM A DEPARTMENT APTLY CALLED

TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY

LET’S SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES HIS COLLEAGUES TO REPLACE THE ‘ABSENT’ ROAD SIGN

AND HOW SERIOUS THE COUNCIL CONSIDERS TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY

WATCH THIS SPACE FOR AN UPDATE

On the 28th November 2013 I finally received a letter from PETER VANGEERSDAELE which is printed on below

Early January 2014 the illuminated NO RIGHT TURN signs have actually been installed.

Regretfully I have noticed that a number of cars are completely ignoring it and are still turning right despite the new signs and that the drivers of these cars are mostly the residents who live on the Himley Road who want to park their cars outside their houses and who would have to drive down Himley Road and come back up again.

The young Asian ‘Lady’ who was the last one I encountered turning right stuck up her fingers and told me to ‘fuck off’ when I pointed out to her that this was a left turn only.
